iPad 3 to Arrive on Steve Jobs? Birthday?

If a recent report from a Taiwanese newspaper is to be believed, the highly-awaited Apple iPad 3 could arrive on Feb. 24. The date has been chosen to honor the company's late co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer, Steve Jobs, who died on Oct. 5. Jobs was born on Feb. 24.

The unnamed source apparently also said the iPad division of Hon Hai Precision Industry is expected to be allowed as little as five days of leave during the Chinese New Year season, next month, to help meet delivery targets. This is significant because in China most industries usually take at least two weeks of leave during this season.

The new tablet, whose first shipment is expected to exceed 4 million units, is expected to arrive in the markets sometime between mid-February and late March, if additional sources, speaking to Economic Daily News are to be believed.

Additionally, it seems that four other manufacturers - Simplo Technology (battery-makers), Genius Electrical Optical (optical lens-suppliers), Amer International Group (connector makers) and Catcher Technology (casing producers) - will be asking employees to work during the holiday period as well, according to a Todayonline.com report.

Futurity.org ? Test quickly diagnoses infections in pets

U. MISSOURI (US) ? A simple blood test that may diagnose pet infections in approximately a third of the current time could lead to a similar test for humans.

?Infections can be difficult to diagnose, and many veterinarians have to send samples to a lab and wait three days or more as the lab attempts to grow a culture,? says Amy DeClue, assistant professor of veterinary internal medicine at the University of Missouri.

?Meanwhile, the infection continues to spread each day that veterinarians wait on lab results, which is detrimental to the patient. In extreme infections, called sepsis, more than half of patients die.

?My group has been evaluating different blood biomarkers that could give a quick and accurate indication of infection, and we believe we?ve found a biomarker that will only require a simple blood test.?

In a ?study published in the journal Veterinary Record, DeClue and colleagues report that measuring the amount of the blood biomarker N-terminal portion of pro C-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pCNP) is a good indication of infection. The same is true in humans.

Working with collaborators at Veterinary Diagnostics Institute, DeClue hopes to develop a portable bedside test that veterinarians could use to quickly test patients for infection and ultimately target a better cure.

?In animal and human medicine, one goal is to reduce the amount of antibiotics used in treatment, to reduce bacterial resistance to antibiotics,? DeClue says. ?If successful, future tests could help veterinarians tailor treatment to the specific problem and reduce antibiotic use.

?The systems in dogs and people are very applicable to each other, so whatever biomarkers we find in dogs could also benefit people.?

Chad Alibozek
Junior, Hoosac Valley

The Hurricanes? steadiest regular season performer, Alibozek has won the Berkshire Classic, the de facto individual county championship, two of the last three years. Two years ago, he finished second.

The coach?s take: It?s unbelievable to watch him play. He?s really got the total game. I wish everyone would practice as much as Chad.

-- Hoosac coach Jay Sniezek Hayden Jarck
Senior,Pittsfield

The linchpin of Pittsfield?s post-season run, Jarck shot a 7-over par at the Ludlow Country Club, along with teammate Adam Brickle. Those scores helped the Generals finish third in Western Mass. Division I. At the state tournament in Millis, Jarck was the county?s top finisher again with a three-over par 75 to tie for sixth. That keyed the Generals? 12th-place overall state finish.

The coach?s take: Last year, he was real good. But this year, he took it to a whole new level. He?s by far the best player I?ve ever coached.

-- PHS coach Lucas Polidoro

Thomas Villetto
Junior, Lenox

The most consistent golfer on the Millionaires? Western Mass. Division III champions. He finished fourth overall at the Western Mass. tournament, and then followed up with a sixth-place finish in the state meet. The Millionaires finished ninth in the state. This is Villetto?s

second consecutive All-Eagle selection.

The coach?s take: Tom is a competitor. This year, he started slowly, but as the year went on, he got his game under control, and he turned in his best scores in the biggest matches. I think he?s going to be great next year.

-- Lenox coach Dick Salinetti

Bryan Cota
Senior, McCann Tech

This will be Cota?s third consecutive year on the All-Eagle team. Finished tied for second in the Western Mass. Division III golf tournament, with a 75 at the Berkshire Hills Country Club.

The coach?s take: I didn?t have to do a lot of coaching with him. He taught me a few things, to be honest. It was fun to watch him attack a course, and shape shots and play so skillfully. We will miss him.

-- McCann coach Justin Kratz

Shawn Folan
Senior, Wahconah

Rebounded nicely to finish second in the Western Mass. D-II meet, despite shooting a 9 on the par-5 12th hole at Springfield?s Franconia Golf Course. Folan was the Warriors? most consistent golfer this season.

The coach?s take: Great work ethic, but I was most impressed by the things you didn?t see. He helped me bring along some of the young guys, which was a big help. And I think if he had not had that one bad hole, he?d have won Western Mass.

-- Wahconah coach Pete Terpak

Bryan Levardi
Senior, Taconic

Finished fourth overall in the Western Mass. Division I golf tournament. Finished third in the Berkshire Classic with a five-over par 79 at the Berkshire Hills Country Club.

An opposing view: Very sound fundamentally, very consistent. He was Taconic?s leader this year.

-- Lenox coach Dick Salinetti

Matt Freitag
Senior, Hoosac Valley

Freitag came on late in the season for the Hurricanes, shooting a 77 at the Division II state tournament in Northborough, good for 16th and the best score among county golfers. He also had a strong finish in the Western Mass. tournament, shooting an 83 to finish sixth overall.

The coach?s take: He is kind of overshadowed by Chad [Alibozek], but he?s a hard worker, and he was only one stroke behind Chad in average. He practices just as hard as Chad, too.

-- Sniezek

Was 2011 The Best Gaming Holiday Season In History? - G4tv.com

Holiday Gift Guide 2011: Non-Game Gifts for Gamers

It's nearing the end of 2011, a deeply craptastic 12 months. It was bad year for the world economy. And for movies.? And for for almost everything else on earth, but while Western civilization may be crumbling around us, know hope: 2011 was definitely a great year for one thing: Video games! And the peak part of this peak year was the 2011 holiday season.

It?s not often that gamers have nothing to complain about, and this holiday season is no exception. However, this time around, the complaints aren?t about bad games or exploitative publishing firms. Instead gamers are complaining that there are just too damn many good games out there. Or that there aren?t enough hours in the day to play them. Or that they have to work during prime Skyrim hours. Either way, I?m nearly positive that this year?s holiday season will go down as one of the greatest few months in video game history.

The Console Wars: Rise of the Machines

All three of the major game consoles are nearing the end of their production. Traditionally at this time in a console?s lifecycle, people are clamoring for the next generation; hedging their bets on upcoming games and looking beyond those being released at the time. Certainly this is the current situation of the Nintendo Wii. The Wii?after peaking in sales and capabilities years ago?is the victim of Nintendo itself. Having announced the Wii U, they essentially voiced a vote of no confidence in the slipping system, instead unintentionally encouraging consumers to sit back and wait?avoiding Nintendo products until the next system launches.

However, the impressive hardware of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have ensured their relevance remain far past that of its predecessors. Not only have they remained relevant, these two consoles continue to rack up sales, even amid the worst economic period since the Great Depression. Allow me to reiterate?with a near nine percent unemployment rate, Americans still purchased 1.7 million 360s and 900,000 PS3s during the month of November alone.

The existential reasoning is hard to suss out. Are Americans looking for escape from their increasingly austere lives? Are video games starting to offer some sort of release unavailable in movies or television? Regardless of the philosophical implications, there are a few reasons we can look at as to why this season above so many others is beginning to distinguish itself as an anomaly.

This season would best be summed up in one word: sequels. The last few months have seen a perfect storm of some of the most popular gaming franchises in the industry all releasing their newest iteration. Every single one of the top ten selling games of November was an installment of a well-known, high selling franchise.

Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3, and Assassin?s Creed: Revelations; just to name a few. If the industry has taught us anything it?s that no matter how successful or wonderful a game is; a direct sequel will always sell more copies. The power of a name is paramount.

Some sequels unfortunately, simply suck. This year, though, this is largely not the case. Just about every sequel we?ve seen is just as wonderful?in general?as its predecessors. After a while I found myself shaking my head as game after game was released to universal critical acclaim. In fact, G4 gave out six perfect scores in the month of November alone. Not to mention the three this month.

It?s like arriving home on Halloween with a sack full of delicious candy, only to realize that your earlier well-laid plans to eat it in a single sitting only bent you over a toilet. Except in our case, each piece of candy requires at the very least eight to ten hours to consume. And like I said, there are no Almond Joys to throw away.

Minecraft Update 1.6 To Add Grass, Shrooms And More -- Planned For This Week

This brings us back to my original argument?this holiday season may never be surpassed in terms of sheer quality and quantity of an array of spectacular video games. Sure, next November we?re sure to see some great games; many of which may be anticipated sequels like BioShock: Infinite. But there is no way we can expect to see the breadth of games we have seen this year.

A perfect alignment of irregular series like Elder Scrolls, Saints Row and Rocksteady?s Batman is far too unlikely already. More unlikely still is all of these games are all so damn good. Also, the fact that the current generation of consoles is so near its expected funeral, yet still selling with such ferocity is not anything anyone could anticipate or hope to repeat.

New Batman: Arkham City Screenshot And Artwork

Looking forward, with systems from both Sony and Microsoft rumored around 2014, many studios may choose to stop or slow development on PS3 and 360 games to get a jump on the next generation. Further, many gamers may start saving their money for bigger expenses; namely a PS4 or Xbox Whatever. This ambiguity from both consumers and developers make the next few holiday seasons tough to call. Beyond announced games, speculation is worthless when our current systems? clocks are ticking away.

Will holiday seasons continue to pump out great games? Sure. Publishers know that the best formula for success is sometimes not simply having a great game; but releasing the game at the most opportune moment. Often this moment is the season when consumers buy the most. Sure, if it?s convenient, publishing studios would love to march their games out before a horde of unwitting mothers and loved ones right before Christmas. But that isn?t always the case.

Hey, maybe we?ll see another season full of high profile titles and high sales. But I can guarantee you that we won?t?all at once?see a game of the scope and brilliance of Skyrim, a game that breaks as many sales records as Modern Warfare 3, or a game that concludes a series quite like Uncharted 3 did. But don?t worry about these glorious days passing you by so quickly. At least you?ll be able to tell your grandkids that you were lucky enough to live through the Winter of Games 2011.

You think you have it rough? In my day we had Skyrim and SWTOR come out within a month of each other.

Samsung GT-N8010 is the next-gen Galaxy Note?

Well what do you know ? even though the Galaxy Note is still not available all over the globe, Samsung is already working on its successor. At least that?s what we think of the mysterious device marked as GT-N8010, which has recently received a Wi-Fi interoperability certificate (PDF download is here).

So why do we think the GT-N8010 has anything to do with the Galaxy Note? Well, the Note?s model number is GT-N7000 and as far as we know ? it was the only newer Samsung device which model number starts with N.

Unfortunately, we don?t have any additional details except that it?s Wi-Fi ready. If I had to guess, there will be a quad-core processor under the hood, as well as LTE radio in select markets (where LTE is available). Putting an even higher resolution display doesn?t make much sense when you think about it.

We?ll definitely be looking where this goes and let you know as soon as we hear something new. Stay tuned in the meantime, k?

Last Iraq Combat Troops Return to U.S.

The last U.S. combat troops are returning to U.S. soil, with 200 soldiers landing Saturday at Fort Hood. Only a few dozen soldiers remain in Kuwait. The soldiers? families waited in drizzling rain and wind on Christmas Eve morning, with some wrapped in blankets and holding signs decorated with candy canes and ornaments. When the announcer yelled ?Charge!? at the end of a brief welcome-home ceremony, wives, children and parents ran to the soldiers, hugging and kissing them. First Sgt. Scott Dawson said ?In the future, I?m sure this will really hit me,? about the significance of being among the last soldiers to leave Iraq, but said ?It?s odd,? because he will most likely be deployed to Afghanistan or somewhere else.

UPDATE: Gingrich slams Va. system for keeping him off GOP ballot

Credit: MARK GORMUS/TIMES-DISPATCH

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich failed to amass the required 10,000 signatures of registered voters.

Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich's campaign attacked Virginia's GOP primary election system on Saturday for keeping him off the state's March 6 Super Tuesday ballot. It was a significant setback for a candidate who has surged in popularity but struggled to organize his campaign.

The state party said that Gingrich, who lives in Virginia, had failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures to appear on the ballot. Texas Gov. Rick Perry also failed to qualify, the state GOP said.

The Gingrich campaign responded that "only a failed system" would disqualify Gingrich and other candidates. It said Gingrich would pursue an aggressive write-in campaign, although state law prohibits write-ins on primary ballots.

"Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates," Gingrich campaign director Michael Krull said in a statement. "We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice."

However, state law says this about primary write-in campaigns: "No write-in shall be permitted on ballots in primary elections."

"Virginia code prohibits write-ins in primaries. He can't do it," said Carl Tobias, a law professor at University of Richmond.

Tobias said Gingrich may have had trouble meeting a requirement that he must submit 400 signatures from each of Virginia's 11 congressional districts.

Gingrich's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, certified earlier Friday by the state GOP, will be the only candidates on the ballot.

The stunning result means Gingrich ? who lives in McLean, led among Virginia's GOP primary voters in the latest poll and is vying with Romney for national front-runner status ? will not get a chance to compete with Romney in the state's primary.

Virginia is one of 11 states holding a primary or a caucus March 6, Super Tuesday.

Also Friday, the Democratic Party of Virginia certified that President Barack Obama was the only Democratic candidate to qualify for the ballot. The State Board of Elections will cancel the scheduled Democratic presidential primary, and all of Virginia's delegates to the Democratic National Convention will be cast for the president.

About 30 GOP volunteers who spent the day checking signatures at state party headquarters in Richmond determined that Gingrich and Perry failed to meet the requirements ? the signatures of at least 10,000 registered voters, with at least 400 from each of the 11 congressional districts. Observers from the campaigns monitored the process.

Gingrich had diverted to Virginia ahead of the deadline in a scramble to qualify for the ballot. He attended an Arlington County rally Wednesday night and on Thursday addressed a Republican Party of Virginia fundraiser in Short Pump.

Paul's campaign submitted 14,361 signatures to the State Board of Elections by Thursday's 5 p.m. deadline. Perry's campaign submitted 11,911. The Gingrich campaign submitted 11,050 signatures, giving him a smaller margin of error than Perry.

Romney, who submitted 16,026 signatures, was the first Republican presidential candidate to file his petitions. His Virginia campaign chairman, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, delivered them Tuesday.

The State Board of Elections turned over the petitions to the state GOP for certification.

The field for Virginia's GOP primary essentially collapsed between Thursday evening and early Saturday morning.? First, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman did not submit signatures to the State Board of Elections by Thursday's 5 p.m. deadline, which meant they were automatically disqualified.

Then Friday and early Saturday, the Perry and Gingrich camps learned that too few of their submitted signatures passed the test.

Virginia's strict petition rules ? requiring hundreds of signatures from each congressional district ? put a premium on campaign organization.

Bolling has been affiliated with Romney since the former governor's 2008 campaign. Paul, who was the Libertarian presidential nominee in 1988 and ran for president as a Republican in 2008, has strong grass-roots support.

Gingrich has not been endorsed by any prominent Virginia Republicans, and there was little indication of a campaign infrastructure in the state.

Gov. Bob McDonnell, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and U.S. Senate hopeful George Allen are neutral so far in the nominating contest.

Former Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore, the 2005 Republican nominee for governor, headed Perry's Virginia campaign. Perry came to Richmond in September to headline a GOP fundraiser at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The significance of Virginia's role in the presidential nominating process remains to be seen. The Iowa caucuses kick off the presidential voting Jan. 3, followed by primaries in New Hampshire on Jan. 10, South Carolina on Jan. 21 and Florida on Jan. 31.

At least 38 dead in Haitian shipwreck off Cuba (Reuters)

HAVANA (Reuters) ? At least 38 people died on Saturday when a boat carrying Haitian migrants sunk off the coast of Guantanamo province in far eastern Cuban, Cuban television reported.

It said 87 people, including seven women, were rescued after Cuban civil defense forces spotted the boat 100 meters off Punta Maisi, which is about 600 miles southeast of Havana.

There were no details on possible cause of the accident or the destination of the boat, but search and rescue efforts were still underway, the report said.

The dead included 21 men and 17 women, it said.

Italy parliament votes to seal austerity budget (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Italy's Senate passed a vote of confidence in the government of Prime Minister Mario Monti on Thursday that put the final seal on an emergency austerity budget rushed through to restore market confidence in the euro zone's third biggest economy.

The upper house voted 257 to 41 for the government, following a similar easy win in the lower house last week.

Monti, said he was happy with the vote and Italy could hold its head high in Europe after passing the package of spending cuts, tax rises and pension reform.

The budget is intended to reverse a collapse of market confidence which has pushed Italy's borrowing costs to untenable levels and put it at the heart of Europe's debt crisis.

Addressing the Senate before the vote, Monti said his technocrat government had to push through the budget as fast as possible.

"Today this chamber concludes a rapid, responsible, complex job... on a decree that was passed in extreme emergency and that enables Italy to hold its head high as it faces the very serious European crisis," Monti declared.

The prime minister, appointed only five weeks ago, said that after addressing Italy's massive debt in the 33 billion euro ($43 billion) budget, the government would turn to the country's second economic millstone, a decade of near zero growth.

Investors turned their spotlight on these two problems in July, sending Italy's borrowing costs rocketing.

Monti replaced Silvio Berlusconi as prime minister last month and formed an administration of technocrats with broad parliamentary support to pass the so-called "Save Italy" decree.

Berlusconi's failure to tackle major reforms and restore market confidence brought Italy to the brink of economic catastrophe, although market pressure has continued since Monti took power.

MONTI CALLS FOR GROWTH

Monti repeated a frequent refrain over recent weeks, that European policy must address growth as well as cutting debt.

Euro zone paymaster Germany has insisted that policy should concentrate on fiscal discipline despite fears by both indebted countries and economists that this will choke off essential growth if taken too far.

The government previously passed the budget in the lower house with a confidence vote last week to eliminate debate on dozens of amendments, many of them brought by the opposition Northern League, which was part of Berlusconi's administration.

League deputies blew referees' whistles and held up a banner reading "Robber Government" in an attempt to disrupt calling of the confidence vote in the Senate on Wednesday.

The votes in both houses allowed the broad swathe of parties supporting Monti to show they are backing him out of a sense of responsibility even if they are uneasy with specific measures.

Berlusconi's People of Liberty Party (PDL) is worried about tax increases and the centre-left Democratic Party about pension cuts, but they know they cannot sabotage the bill without unleashing an economic disaster including a possible default.

In a reference to serious tension in recent days between the government and trade unions over labor market reform, Monti said the issue would need more detailed dialogue with both them and employers before it was decided.

A suggestion by Welfare Minister Elsa Fornero this week that the government could take measures making it easier to fire workers caused a union outcry and she has since acknowledged she was "naive" to suggest it before more detailed discussion.

The severity of Monti's package has taken a toll on his popularity, which fell to 46 percent from 61 percent the previous week, according to a poll published in Corriere della Sera on Sunday.

Berlusconi has promised Monti full support but expressed fear that "the horse's medicine could kill the horse," a reference to widespread fears that the budget could stamp out fragile growth.

Monti says markets will eventually react positively to Italy's efforts, arguing that lower interest rates will help offset the effects of the austerity measures on growth.

While bond yields have come down, with the 10-year issue steadily below 7 percent, the austerity package has failed to bring them back to more sustainable levels of about 5 percent.

Last week, ratings agency Fitch placed Italy and five other euro zone countries on a downgrade warning in the absence of a "comprehensive solution" to the debt crisis.

Italy's economy has expanded by an average of only 0.4 percent per year for the past decade.

It shrank 0.2 percent in the third quarter of this year, compared with 0.5 percent growth in Germany and 0.4 percent in France, and economists don't predict a recovery until the second half of next year.

The main employers' lobby, Confindustria, predicts a 1.6 percent decline in gross domestic product in 2012, four times worse than the government's forecast.

Monti's budget went into effect on December 4, when it was passed by the cabinet, but needed parliamentary approval within 60 days to become permanent.

Judge upholds extradition for "Survivor" producer (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A federal judge on Wednesday upheld an order to extradite to Mexico a former producer for the TV show "Survivor" to face charges he killed his wife while on holiday in the resort town of Cancun.

The ruling allows the case against Bruce Beresford-Redman to be sent to the U.S. State Department to make the final determination on Mexico's extradition request, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The badly beaten body of Beresford-Redman's wife, Monica, was found in a sewer at a resort hotel in Cancun, Mexico, where the couple and their children were vacationing in April 2010.

Mexican authorities contend the couple had an argument, Bruce beat her to death, then dumped her body.

Attorneys for Beresford-Redman had asked U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez to overturn another judge's decision in July that the former "Survivor" producer should be extradited.

But Gutierrez on Wednesday denied that request and, in a two-page opinion, cited "pages upon pages" of evidence against Beresford-Redman.

That includes reports of screams heard from the couple's Cancun hotel room, the fact her body was found 25 meters from the room, scratches on Beresford-Redman's body and his flight from Mexico, the judge wrote.

Stephen Jaffe, a spokesman for the defense attorneys, said in a statement they are "weighing their options with Mr. Beresford-Redman regarding the future."

One option for the defense team is filing a habeas petition with the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, Mrozek said.

Beresford-Redman denies the homicide charge against him and

maintains he is innocent.

US plans $1 trillion investment in India

What?s a trillion between friends ay? Well, while I doubt the US can afford this, it?s probably worth it just for how much it will piss off Pakistan.

KOCHI: The United States will invest one trillion dollars for infrastructure development in India, said Nirupama Rao, India?s ambassador to the US.

She was speaking at an interactive session organised by the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and its Ladies? Forum at the Chamber Hall on Thursday.

In order to discuss the possibilities of investment, a trade delegation led by the United States Commerce Minister will visit India By March, 2012. Discussions towards an ever green revolution similar to the earlier Green Revolution using US expertise to increase agriculture production and rural income will take place.

Space technology for monsoon prediction and for linkage between farm and market will also be considered. Nirupama said that around 2.8 million Malayalis are part of the Indian community in the US.

In terms of trade, business contracts between the two countries have grown exponentially over the last few years. Also, the imports and exports are on the rise. In the last five years, the US exports to India have increased three times and Indian exports to the US have doubled.

The FDI by the US in India has increased seven times, Nirupama added.

Apart from political and strategic cooperation, energy, education, agriculture, science and technology, healthcare, space technology and skill development are the other areas which will be given prominence in the bilateral relations between the two nations. Trade and economic relations will be the central driving force in the multifaceted partnership.

Obama uses public pressure to push GOP on tax cuts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama on Thursday chided House Republicans he said are holding up an extension of expiring payroll tax cuts, saying the debate is "about the American people."

To make his point, Obama was flanked at the White House by people who said they would be stretched thin financially if Congress failed to extend the cuts before the end of the year. If no deal is reached, the White House says a person making $50,000 a year would see a loss of about $40 per paycheck.

"Now there may be some folks in the House who refuse to vote for this compromise because they don't think 40 bucks is a lot of money," Obama said. "But anyone who knows how to stretch a budget knows that at the end of the week or the end of the month, $40 can make all the difference in the world."

In seeking to ratchet up pressure on Republicans for a deal, Obama reiterated his call for a two-month extension of the payroll tax cuts, a measure already agreed to by an overwhelming majority of Senators from both parties. He said the House GOP's refusal to sign on to the bipartisan deal was exactly why the American people have grown so frustrated with Washington.

"This is an issue where an overwhelming number of people in both parties agree," Obama said. "How can we not get that done? Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when people agree to things we can't do it? It doesn't make any sense. Enough is enough."

House Republicans say they oppose the two-month deal because it doesn't provide the public and businesses enough certainty. They've called on Obama and Senate Democrats to instead negotiate a full-year extension now.

Earlier Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner called Obama, their second conversation in as many days. The White House said Obama committed to immediately starting talks on a full-year deal if the House first passes the two-month extension. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has also urged the House to pass a short-term extension while starting work on the full-year deal.

Iraqi pleads guilty to trying to kill US troops (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? An Iraqi living in Kentucky pleaded guilty on Friday to charges that he tried to kill U.S. soldiers in Iraq, aided al Qaeda operatives there and taught how to make roadside bombs, the Justice Department said.

Waad Ramadan Alwan, 30, pleaded guilty to a 23-count indictment in a federal court in Kentucky - a case that drew harsh criticism from Republicans in the U.S. Congress who argued that such terrorism suspects should be tried in military courts at the American military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Obama administration rebuffed such demands, countering that federal courts also can handle major terrorism cases.

"The successful investigation, arrest, interrogation and prosecution of Mr. Alwan demonstrates the effectiveness of our intelligence and law enforcement authorities in bringing terrorists to justice," Lisa Monaco, the head of the Justice Department's national security division, said in a statement.

Alwan was accused of taking part in roadside bomb attacks on U.S. troops between 2003 and 2006, linked in one such instance by fingerprints obtained by U.S. forces from a device that did not detonate.

The FBI started investigating him in September 2009 and nearly a year later began using a confidential source to talk with him about his activities in Iraq, which allegedly included using improvised explosive devices, known as IEDs, and sniper rifles to target U.S. troops.

During conversations with the source, Alwan said he worked at a power plant but often hid roadside bombs, according to court papers filed earlier this year. He also allegedly boasted of attacking Hummers and Bradley fighting vehicles.

He and a second Iraqi, Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, also were charged for allegedly trying to provide support and weapons to an al Qaeda affiliate in Iraq in a sting operation subsequently run by U.S. authorities.

Hammadi has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The two Iraqis entered the United States in 2009 after receiving refugee status. They were arrested in May in their hometown of Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Alwan faces at least 25 years and up to life in a U.S. prison under the plea agreement and he is scheduled to be sentenced on April 3.

'Bama offense quiet as No. 23 Tide fall to K-State (AP)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Anthony Grant doesn't care whether Alabama scores 50 points or 100, so long as it's one more than the Crimson Tide's opponent.

The problem lately is that hasn't been the case.

JaMychal Green had 20 points and Trevor Releford added 14 points and six assists, but they got little help in a 71-58 loss to Kansas State on Saturday night. It was the third loss in four games for No. 23 Alabama, and the fourth straight in which it has failed to eclipse 62 points.

"We come into games trying to win. It's never about how many points we score," Grant said. "When I look at the numbers, 18 turnovers, (Kansas State shoots) 63 percent from the field in the second half, that makes it very difficult to win."

Jordan Henriquez scored a career-high 17 points, Jamar Samuels had 14 and Angel Rodriguez added a career-best 13 for the Wildcats (7-1), who used a 19-6 run midway through the second half to avoid going to overtime for the third consecutive game.

Kansas State lost to West Virginia in two extra sessions last week and needed overtime to beat North Florida last Sunday.

"It takes a little time. It's not a perfect science," Kansas State coach Frank Martin said. "You've got young guys trying to learn how to play in college basketball. You've got guys trying to figure out their roles. It takes time. It's not as easy as it sounds."

Grant is certainly finding that out.

Alabama (8-3) is one of the nation's best defensive teams, and that was on display early against Kansas State. The Wildcats were 2 of 18 from the field and fell behind by seven points before finally hitting their stride. Once they did, the Crimson Tide simply couldn't keep up.

Releford grew up in suburban Kansas City and attended Bishop Miege High School. His homecoming would have been much more memorable had Alabama been as stingy over the final 30 minutes as it was over the first 10.

Or had the offense been able to score enough.

"Kansas State played a good game," Releford said. "They got the hustle plays in the second half, shot the ball a little bit better and that's what it took to win."

The Wildcats were still clinging to a 38-37 lead with just more than 13 minutes left when Samuels hit a 3-pointer off a feed from Rodriguez, one of his career-best seven assists. Shane Southwell scored moments later, Samuels added a pair of free throws and Rodriguez scored after a nifty behind-the-back move that got him open in the lane to make it 49-39 with less than 10 minutes to play.

The lead swelled to 61-45 when Henriquez scored back-to-back baskets and Thomas Gipson added a tough bucket in the paint. The Crimson Tide never got close the rest of the way.

Kansas State sealed the game with free throws down the stretch.

The game matched a pair of head coaches in Grant and Martin who were teammates at Miami (Fla.) Senior High School, where they met as sophomores. In fact, Grant is the godfather of Martin's eldest child, Brandon, and they remain good friends.

That doesn't mean they wanted to win any less than usual.

Both coaches spent the majority of the game riding the officials, riding their own players ? more or less yelling at anyone within earshot ? and coaching with the passion of March in mid-December.

Alabama, one of the nation's best defensive teams, held the Wildcats to two field goals over the first 10 minutes, slowly building a meager lead. Tony Mitchell's first basket with 9:08 left in the half made it 15-8, the Crimson Tide's biggest lead of the game.

The Wildcats still trailed 17-12 with less than 5 minutes left when Martavious Irving scored and Rodriguez fed Henriquez for an easy dunk, starting a 14-7 run to end the half. Henriquez's bucket with 18 seconds remaining allowed Kansas State to take a 26-24 lead into the break.

The game was being played at a pace that favored Grant's Crimson Tide, who came in allowing just more than 55 points per game ? 11th-best in the nation. But the Wildcats heated up in the second half, blowing past that number with 7 1/2 minutes left.

"We might not be perfect," Martin said, "but we're not taking a backseat to anybody either."

Oil prices rise on improving economic news (AP)

Oil prices are rising on optimism that U.S. economic growth will boost energy demand.

Benchmark crude on Friday rose 23 cents to $94.10 per barrel in New York. Brent crude gained 69 cents to $103.69 a barrel in London.

Oil traders were encouraged by higher stock prices. When stocks rise, it points to growth and more oil demand. Major indexes were up about 1 percent or more in morning trading.

Investors are encouraged by a Labor Department report that shows consumer prices stayed flat in November, evidence that inflation is under control. Worries about Europe also eased as Italy approved a package of austerity measures.

In the U.S., retail gasoline prices fell a penny to a national average of $3.25 per gallon.

Rick Perry: The Tim Tebow of the GOP!

At last night's Republican presidential debate, Rick Perry sought to reignite his maligned candidacy by likening himself to a beloved, American underdog figure.

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

Asked point blank about his awful debating skills and whether he could take on President Obama, Perry likened himself to the former University of Florida standout, who was told repeatedly he could never succeed in the NFL due to his unorthodox style.

Touting himself as the "national champion of job creation," Perry said that when Iowa votes in the first-in-the-nation caucuses January 3, he hopes to make like Tebow:

School defends telling parents student is gay

By Sylvia Wood, msnbc.com

A school district in Utah is defending its decision to ?out? a middle-school student as gay to his parents in light of safety and bullying concerns.

?The administrator did exactly the right thing,? said Rhonda Bromley, a spokeswoman for the Alpine School District in Lehi, Utah. ?We are not going to back down. We take bullying very, very seriously.?

The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network urged caution in these situations.

?Schools should not out LGBT students without their consent,? said GLSEN Executive Director?Eliza Byard. ?Outing a student not only violates their right to privacy, but also could compromise their safety. Parents can be notified of their child being bullied at school, but without disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity.?

The situation started last week when the 14-year-old?s class at Willowcreek Middle School was assigned to create an advertisement about themselves to hang on the classroom wall. The boy wrote about being gay, Bromley said.

When the teacher approached him about whether he wanted to share that information publicly, the boy said he did. The teacher decided to involve the assistant school principal, who spoke with the boy and counseled him on talking with his parents.

The student was hesitant to approach his parents, but agreed ?reluctantly? to let the administrator to speak with them, Bromley said.? At the boy?s request, he was not present when his parents were told.

?The student chose himself to make his sexuality known in a variety of ways,? Bromley said. ?And there had already started to be some negative feedback.??

?If there is the potential for a bullying or a harassment situation, it?s the responsibility of the school to step in and to make sure the student is safe,? she said.

School districts across the country are struggling with anti-gay bullying in light of highly publicized cases involving teen suicides.? In October 2010, the suicide death of two teen boys prompted U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to issue a call for action.

Their deaths followed at least three other suicides that year linked to ?the trauma of being bullied and harassed for their actual or perceived sexual orientation was too much to bear,? Duncan said at the time.

?This is a moment where every one of us -- parents, teachers, students, elected officials, and all people of conscience -- needs to stand up and speak out against intolerance in all its forms,? he said.

Byard said it?s important for schools to deal with bullying and notify parents of any instances, without disclosing a student?s sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Taking away the choice for a LGBT student to come out on their own terms opens the door to significant risks, including harassment at school and family rejection,"?she said.

Andy Thayer, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network, said?family rejection is a real risk, and some young gay teens have found themselves homeless as a result.?

The school "could very well have worsened that situation considerably," he said.

Bromley said the case at Alpine School District has drawn national attention, in part, because the student?s friends created a Facebook page, which has since turned into a an invitation-only group. The original page, which received more than 400 ?likes,? asked students and supporters to write the assistant principal in defense of the student.

Bromley said some of the information on the original page was inaccurate, including the claim that the district suspended the boy. She said his parents chose to keep him home this week.

?We?ve received many phone calls and emails from many people based on inaccurate information,? she said.? She said the boy was never in trouble and the goal of the district was to keep him safe.

?The last thing we want is for students to think there would be some sort of consequence for this,? she said.

Abused children's brains work like soldiers' do

The brains of children from violent homes function like those of soldiers when it comes to detecting threats.

Eamon McCrory at University College London used fMRI to scan the brains of 20 outwardly healthy children who had been maltreated and 23 "controls" from safe environments.

During the scans, the children, aged 12 on average, viewed a mixture of sad, neutral and angry faces. When they saw angry faces, the maltreated children showed extra activity in the amygdala and the anterior insula, known to be involved in threat detection and anticipation of pain. Combat soldiers show similar heightened activity (Current Biology, DOI: 10.1016/j.cub.2011.10.015).

"Our belief is that these changes could reflect neural adaption," says McCrory. "Maltreated kids and active soldiers are adapting to survive in a threatening or dangerous environment." Although this could help children survive their early years, it may predispose them to mental health problems in adulthood, such as depression or anxiety, says McCrory.

A related study, published this week by Hilary Blumberg of Yale University School of Medicine and colleagues, demonstrates that areas of the brain important for emotional processing are deficient in grey matter in adolescents who suffered from maltreatment as children (Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, DOI: 10.1001/archpediatrics.2011.565).

"The studies suggest that childhood maltreatment ?gets into the brain', and becomes biologically embedded," says Avshalom Caspi, who studies mental health at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

(AP) ? Two self-described Disney "fanatics" have purchased a house in Utah modeled after the colorful home featured in the animated movie "Up."

Discovering the house in the Salt Lake City suburb of Herriman, Utah, was a dream come true for Clinton and Lynette Hamblin of Petaluma, Calif. The couple had been looking for a house with some of the same flourishes as the one in the movie, such as a multi-colored exterior or a blue kitchen with retro appliances.

They initially looked in California until they saw news reports about the house in Utah that included every possible detail from the movie and was even officially recognized as the "Up" house by Disney. Even more surprising was the $400,000 price tag, which was less than homes they looked at in California.

For them, however, the real attraction to the house was it underscored the overriding theme of the movie.

"We just love the message of the movie ? adventure is out there," Lynette Hamblin told The Salt Lake Tribune.

The house is modeled on its appearance early in the movie, when Carl and Ellie Frederickson are flush with the optimism of newlyweds. That was before infertility undid their hopes for a family and Ellie's death left Carl a curmudgeonly recluse who refuses to succumb to developers and sell his house.

Homebuilder Adam Bangerter told The Associated Press earlier this year that he and his brothers ? who collectively own Bangerter Homes ? wanted to replicate the house because it's iconic and plays an important role in the movie.

"It illustrates what homeownership really is, and it's not an investment. It's part of the American dream to have a house to care for, to improve and to make part of your family," Bangerter said during a tour of the house.

Herriman City spokeswoman Nicole Martin said about 45,000 people have visited the home for tours, and will continue to do so through the month of December. City leaders even recently passed a resolution honoring the house for its economic impact.

The Hamblins plan to move into the home after closing Jan. 4, which happens to be Lynette Hamblin's birthday.
