I was recently given the opportunity to watch a pre-release copy of CJ Hunt?s long-awaited documentary, ?In Search of the Perfect Human Diet.? ?Honored and delighted, I accepted. This is a big film, guys. I wouldn?t expect to see it on any Oscar lists or anything, but it?s big nonetheless. You may have heard of it already. Robb Wolf?s been championing the cause since way back in 2010, when CJ was trying to raise funds for production. Erwan Le Corre drummed up some support, too. I gave the trailer?s release some Weekend Link Love last year, and now, on the eve of its release, I?m reviewing the film. I couldn?t be more excited.

This film was a labor of love on the part of CJ. It kinda had to be, since its premise isn?t blockbuster material. It doesn?t tug at heartstrings, nor does it present a harrowing, gripping narrative full of conflicts and conflict resolutions that rival the best feature films. No, ?In Search of the Perfect Human Diet? is exactly what it sounds like: the chronicling of one man?s quest to figure out what humans should be eating. It?s not a sexy premise that sponsors would fall all over themselves to get in on. It?s not selling anything (but the film itself). It?s not even promoting any particular paleo or Primal eating book.?It appears, on its surface, to be a niche title, with a limited audience, but consider the subject matter. It?s about you, me, your friends, that guy across the street whose name you don?t even know, billions of strangers scattered across the globe, and billions more scattered across time. In short, this movie is about humans, about real people, and the diet we evolved eating. That sounds like a massive target demographic to me. But because the ancestral health community, while growing, is still relatively small, the film had to funded almost entirely by donations from individual humans who love this way of life and believe in it, have garnered benefits from it, and who want it available on a larger, different stage for all to see. If you were among the donators, I thank you, because you made this very important documentary possible.

That said, let?s talk a bit about the contents of the film and why I liked it so much.

First, CJ Hunt is a natural in front of the camera. He has over twenty years of experience in broadcasting, voice-overs, and television, and it definitely shows. The guy has a smooth voice and just comes across really well. No sign of loincloths, spears, scraggly beards (although I have no doubt he could pull one off), or toe shoes that might scare off Grandma.

Second, it tells a great story that should be pretty familiar to most of you. CJ was a seemingly healthy, lean 23-year old doing the right exercises and eating the right food when he had a heart attack. A full cardiac arrest ? while jogging, no less. Now, this was due to a birth defect, not a poor lifestyle, but it made him think about health in a different way. He resolved to find the ?perfect diet,? if such a thing existed at all. It?s what many of us have gone through, whether personally or vicariously: a catastrophic health event strikes, early in life when everything is supposed to be all peaches and roses; bouncing from diet to diet in his search for absolute dietary truth (complete with forays into veganism and raw foodism), never really finding it; discovering a promising lead on yet another dietary path; following that one, bumping into Paleolithic anthropology, and everything just clicking. Is that your story? It?s mine.

Third, although CJ?s been eating this way for over five years now, he doesn?t assume that the viewer knows what?s going on. He doesn?t gear this movie to you, the faithful Mark?s Daily Apple reader. He aims it directly at those who actually need the help most, as well as the skeptics who think the ancestral lifestyle is nonsense, a ?just-so? story steeped in the naturalistic fallacy with zero evidence in its favor. All those common complaints and ?debunkings? get smashed to pieces. Best of all, the film?s science is extremely approachable, made all the more so thanks to CJ. When an expert on neanderthal and early human genetics at the Max Planck Institute throws around talk about isotopic dietary analyses that might confuse some folks, CJ asks the right questions to get at the real-world dietary implications of these findings. So instead of jumping out with standard Primal eating prescriptions or suggestions from the start, the film is a gradual exploration of human evolution, including the dietary pressures that shaped and informed that evolution. The diet arises organically out of the scientific groundwork. CJ makes no prescriptions, instead letting the evidence and the experts speak for themselves.

The most moving scenes take place at the dig site and with the Max Planck geneticist. I talk about this stuff all the time, and I and many others write about how meat eating shaped our evolution, but there?s always a sense of distance and abstraction. Links to journal articles are helpful and all, but there?s really nothing like seeing the dig site with the layers of animal bones and tools, hearing the anthropologist with dirty knees from kneeling in the ancient, ancient earth say that the diet of the humans who lived there was ?primarily reindeer,? or listening to Prof. Michael Richards discuss how his team has yet to find evidence of a vegan human via isotope analysis. These are the people who actually do the hard labor, write the papers, and run tests talking directly about the implications of their work. Rather than me or Robb or whoever else writing blogs or books about our interpretations of the work, the people who produce the work are stepping out from academia and giving their honest summation of the evidence for ancestral eating. If they?re coming to similar conclusions as us, that?s huge.

Professor Loren Cordain has a great scene where he uses a football field to illustrate just how far we?ve come as a species, how long we were eating wild plants and animals exclusively, and how recently ? in the big picture ? our lifestyles have drastically changed. It?s a great visual that will resonate with a lot of people.

Overall, ?In Search of the Perfect Human Diet? presents a great introduction to and justification for ancestral eating. It?s hard to get someone to read a book or even check out a blog, but if they can sit reasonably still for an hour and a half while an entertaining, engaging movie plays, they?ll get the general idea behind this stuff and want to learn more. It presents a compelling case for the evolutionary foundation of the diet we prescribe.

The movie has been made and released to DVD, but the battle doesn?t stop there. The more copies they sell and the more people watch it, the larger our community will grow. If you want to support a great movie, a great cause, and (in my opinion) the answer to the obesity epidemic that?s showing no signs of reversing, pick up a copy of ?In Search of the Perfect Human Diet.? NEW YORK (AP) ? New York's mayor offered a robust defense Friday of a secret police department effort to monitor mosques and Muslim businesses and student groups in several states, following a week of criticism from college administrators and politicians who said the intelligence-gathering pried too deeply into the lives of law-abiding people.

"We just cannot let our guard down again," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Speaking on his weekly radio show on WOR-AM, Bloomberg declined to discuss details of the anti-terrorism programs, detailed in a series of stories by The Associated Press. But he said the intelligence-gathering was "legal," ''appropriate" and "constitutional."

It was a more vigorous defense of the police department ? and a more dire picture of the dangers faced by the city ? than he offered just days ago, before the criticism intensified.

Bloomberg said the efforts were vital to protect the city, which took the brunt of the 9/11 attacks and also witnessed the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

"We are not going to repeat the mistakes that we made after the 1993 bombing," he said. "We just cannot let our guard down again. We cannot slack in our vigilance. The threat was real. The threat is real. The threat is not going away."

As he has previously, the mayor denied that the department's monitoring of Muslims not suspected of any crime amounted to spying. Instead, he suggested that the department's intelligence-gathering efforts ? which involved photographing mosques, eavesdropping on conversations inside shops, and keeping files on Muslims who Americanized their names ? amounted to looking around, "just to kind of get familiar with what's going on."

"We don't target individuals based on race and religion," he said.

His remarks came at the end of a week that started with the police department coming under harsh criticism from several college administrators, including the president of Yale University, after the AP revealed that police agents had monitored Muslim student groups around the Northeast and had sent an undercover agent on a whitewater rafting trip with one group of college students.

More criticism came from public officials in New Jersey after another AP report detailed a secret effort by the NYPD to photograph every mosque in Newark and catalog Muslim businesses.

Officials in three states have traded accusations over who knew what about such NYPD programs.

Critics have said it isn't appropriate for the police to spy on law-abiding citizens without reason to believe they have committed a crime. Newark Mayor Corey Booker was among several New Jersey officials who said they were surprised and concerned to learn that the NYPD had broadly monitored Muslims and mosques in that state.

Bloomberg has been unapologetic about the police department's efforts, and he said again Friday that the NYPD would continue to do "everything that the law permits us to do" to detect terrorists operating in the U.S. before they have a chance to act, even if those activities turn out to be unpopular.

"This is not a joke. This is not a political statement, a political football to play with," he said.

Legal and Constitutional challenges to these new laws around the country, as passed by Republican legislatures and governors in the wake of the 2010 election, are working their way through the courts on behalf of those who are likely to be disenfranchised by them. In Wisconsin, two different law suits --- one by the League of Women Voters of WI and another by the ACLU --- have already been filed.

Elsewhere, the GOP's new polling place Photo ID restriction law in South Carolina was recently rejected by the U.S. Dept. of Justice after it was found, according to the state's own statistics, to discriminate against minorities, a violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which requires a number of jurisdictions in the country with a history of racial discrimination to receive federal preclearance for all new election laws.

The state has vowed to appeal the DoJ's ruling. The section of the 47-year old Voting Rights Act requiring preclearance for new election laws in some 17 jurisdictions in the nation is also being challenged by opponents of the law who charge the law itself is discriminatory...against those jurisdictions. The VRA was renewed for another 25 years in 2006 by bi-partisan votes of 98 to 0 in the U.S. Senate and 390 to 33 in the Republican-controlled U.S. House. The renewal was signed by George W. Bush.

WASHINGTON, DC, February 15, 2012 Highly educated whites and minorities are no more likely to support workplace affirmative action programs than are their less educated peers, according to a new study in the March issue of Social Psychology Quarterly, which casts some doubt on the view that an advanced education is profoundly transformative when it comes to racial attitudes.

"I think this study is important because there's a common view that education is uniformly liberalizing, and this study showsin a number of casesthat it's not," said study author Geoffrey T. Wodtke, a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan.

Titled, "The Impact of Education on Intergroup Attitudes: A Multiracial Analysis," the study analyzes the effects of education on racial attitudes among whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians using data from the Multi-City Study of Urban Inequality 1992-1994, which interviewed adults in Boston, Atlanta, Detroit, and Los Angeles, and the 1990-2010 waves of the nationally representative General Social Survey.

Wodtke's study finds that while being better educated does not increase the likelihood that whites and minorities approve of affirmative action in the workplace, it does increase the probability that they support race-targeted job training. "The distinction between those two policies is that one is opportunity enhancing and the other is outcome equalizing," Wodtke said. "I think that some of the values that are promoted through education, such as individualism and meritocracy, are just much more consistent with opportunity enhancing policies like job training than they are with redistributive or outcome equalizing policies like affirmative action."

Still, Wodtke, a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, said he was surprised to find that better educated blacks and Hispanics are no more supportive of workplace affirmative action programs than are their less educated peers. "This surprised me because it's thought that highly educated minorities are most likely to benefit from affirmative action programs," he said.

According to Wodtke, there could be a couple of reasons why more educated blacks and Hispanics are no more likely to support affirmative action in the workplace than are their less educated peers. "One possibility is that affirmative action programs may have the unintended effect of stigmatizing people who have benefited from them," Wodtke said. "As a result of this stigmatization, people who have seemingly benefitted from affirmative action may just lose faith in the efficacy of these programs to overcome racial discrimination in the labor market."

Another possibility is that people with more advanced educations, regardless of race, become socialized in such a way that their own support for more radical social policies is somewhat diluted, Wodtke said. "The data suggest that one ideological function of the formal educational system is to marginalize ideas and values that are particularly challenging to existing power structures, perhaps even among those that occupy disadvantaged social positions," Wodtke said.

The study also finds that while whites, Hispanics, and blacks with higher levels of education are more likely to reject negative racial stereotypes than are their less educated peers, this pattern does not hold true for Asians. In fact, education has no effect on negative stereotyping among Asians, and many Asians at all levels of education hold negative views about blacks and Hispanics.

"It may have something to do with Asian's social position relative to other racial groups in the United States," Wodtke said. "Some posit that Asians and to a lesser extent Hispanics occupy a 'racial middle ground' between whites and blacks. So, it's possible that the non-effect of education on negative stereotyping among Asians is related to their self perceived risk of downward assimilation and their efforts to avoid this outcome."

DUBLIN (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI has been "relentless and consistent" in seeking to oust child abusers from the priesthood worldwide, the pontiff's new American envoy to Ireland said Sunday in his first homily here.

Archbishop Charles Brown, a 52-year-old Manhattan native and veteran Vatican insider, was making his first public address since officially taking up his post as Irish papal nuncio three days ago.

"From the beginning, Pope Benedict was resolute and determined to put into place changes which would give the church the ability to deal more effectively with those who abuse trust. ... Pope Benedict has been relentless and consistent on this front," Brown told worshippers and diplomatic guests at a service at Dublin's Pro-Cathedral.

The first-time diplomat faces a delicate repair job in Ireland, a traditionally Catholic nation that has seen Mass attendance plummet in line with nearly two decades of pedophile-priest scandals.

Last year Prime Minister Enda Kenny accused the Vatican of overseeing a cover-up culture that encouraged the rape of children. The Vatican took two months to issue a legalistic rebuttal that sidestepped its refusal to help a series of Irish state-ordered investigations.

Ireland then closed its Vatican embassy but insisted this was purely a cost-cutting measure, a claim widely disbelieved in Ireland since the country's ongoing struggle to stave off national bankruptcy.

Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, widely considered to be Ireland's most reform-minded Catholic leader, told reporters he expected that Ireland and the Vatican would compromise on arrangements to open a new, cheaper Irish embassy in Rome. Ireland still operates one embassy in the Italian capital, but the Vatican insists that countries fund completely separate diplomatic facilities.

Speaking to reporters outside the cathedral, Martin said he was confident that the Vatican would permit Ireland to open "a leaner embassy" that is separate but on the same site as Ireland's Italian embassy.

In his homily, Brown reiterated the Vatican's longheld line that its leaders have never obstructed Irish efforts to identify and punish several hundred child abusers in parishes and religious orders.

Brown noted his own 17-year work as an official of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the powerful Vatican body that enforces church policies ? including the removal of pedophiles from the priesthood. Benedict, then known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, oversaw the body from 1981 until his promotion to pope in 2005.

"I speak from my own experience when I tell you that Pope Benedict was scandalized and dismayed as he learned about the tragedy of abuse perpetrated by some members of the clergy and of religious congregations," Brown said. "He felt deeply the wounds of those who had been harmed and who so often had not been listened to."

Ratzinger in 2001 was responsible for a new church edict ordering bishops worldwide to forward all known abuse cases to the congregation, so that offending priests could be more effectively defrocked under terms of the church's own canon laws.

But that and several other key church messages, including the pope's 2010 papal letter to the Irish people, have ignored accusations that Vatican policies discouraged Irish bishops from telling police about crimes. To this day, official Vatican policy remains ambiguous on the matter, stressing the need to observe the church's own rulebook.

A decade of Irish fact-finding commissions into the scandals has determined that church officials did not tell police of any crimes until the mid-1990s and only because Irish abuse victims had started to sue the church, challenging decades of Irish deference to church authority. One bishop was found to have continued to cover up crimes as recently as 2008.

The Vatican refused to respond to letters sent by Irish investigators seeking access to the church's secret files on abuse cases in Rome. The Vatican later said it couldn't respond because the investigators had failed to file their information requests through the Irish government.

More than 14,000 people have received abuse settlements in Ireland exceeding euro1.2 billion ($1.6 billion). The payouts have been funded largely by taxpayers rather than the church, another source of continuing church-state tensions.
